The death of an Australian teenager from a rare allergy linked to tick bites has become a powerful reminder of the hidden health risks posed by one of the country’s most common outdoor hazards.

Jeremy Webb, who died after suffering a severe allergic reaction to mammalian meat, has been identified as Australia’s first confirmed fatality from alpha-gal syndrome, a condition triggered by certain tick bites that can make eating red meat life-threatening. Medical experts say his case underscores the need for greater awareness among both the public and healthcare professionals.

A Family Reflects on Missed Warning Signs

Jeremy’s mother, Myfanwy Webb, has spoken about the moments leading up to her son’s death and the questions that have remained with the family ever since.

She has recalled a birthday celebration several years earlier when Jeremy experienced breathing difficulties after eating at a restaurant. An ambulance was called as his condition deteriorated, but the significance of the reaction was not fully understood at the time. Looking back, the family believes it may have been an early warning of the allergy that later proved fatal.

In June 2022, while camping with friends on the New South Wales Central Coast, Jeremy became critically ill after eating beef sausages. He suffered an anaphylactic reaction that triggered an asthma attack and later died in hospital. A subsequent coronial investigation concluded that the allergic response was caused by mammalian meat allergy associated with previous tick bites.

What Is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Alpha-gal syndrome, also known as mammalian meat allergy, develops after bites from certain tick species. In Australia, the condition has been linked primarily to the paralysis tick.

Rather than reacting immediately after eating, people with the allergy often develop symptoms between two and ten hours later. Reactions can range from stomach pain and vomiting to hives, breathing difficulties and, in severe cases, life-threatening anaphylaxis. The condition can also be triggered by products containing mammalian-derived ingredients, including some forms of gelatin and certain medications.

Unlike many food allergies that appear in childhood, alpha-gal syndrome develops after exposure to tick bites. Researchers believe not everyone who is bitten will develop the condition, but repeated exposure increases the risk.

Calls for Better Public Education

Jeremy’s parents sought a coronial inquest in the hope that lessons from their son’s death could help protect others.

Medical experts who gave evidence during the proceedings described earlier healthcare encounters as missed opportunities to identify the allergy and educate the family about its risks. The coroner also recommended that Jeremy’s case be used as a learning resource within the local health system to improve recognition of the condition.

Allergy specialists and advocacy groups have renewed calls for broader public health campaigns focused on tick bite prevention and earlier diagnosis of alpha-gal syndrome. They argue that increasing awareness could reduce the risk of future fatalities, particularly in regions where paralysis ticks are common.

Cases Are Increasing in Parts of Australia

Although fatal reactions remain extremely uncommon, experts say diagnoses of mammalian meat allergy have been rising in recent years, particularly along Australia’s east coast where paralysis ticks are widespread.

Researchers have reported growing numbers of cases in tick-prone regions, prompting concerns that the condition remains under-recognised despite becoming more common. Prevention efforts focus on avoiding tick bites through protective clothing, insect repellents and appropriate tick removal methods.

A Lasting Legacy

For Jeremy Webb’s family, sharing his story is about more than revisiting a painful loss. They hope increased understanding of alpha-gal syndrome will encourage earlier diagnosis and help people recognise that an ordinary tick bite can, in rare cases, have life-altering consequences.

Health experts continue to stress that while the allergy is uncommon, anyone who develops unexplained allergic reactions hours after eating red meat—particularly after known tick exposure—should seek medical assessment. Greater awareness, they say, could prevent future tragedies.
