A night of music, dancing and celebration turned into a scene of panic in Toronto after gunfire broke out during the popular Salsa on St. Clair street festival, leaving two people dead and four others injured.
Toronto police said officers responded to reports of an active shooter shortly after 8:12 p.m. local time near St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, where thousands of people had gathered for the annual Latin cultural event. As officers arrived, they found six people suffering from gunshot wounds. Two men were pronounced dead, while four others were taken for medical treatment.

Investigation Focuses on Exchange of Gunfire
Authorities later clarified that the incident was not the result of a random active shooter moving through the crowd. Instead, investigators believe the violence stemmed from an exchange of gunfire between two individuals who appeared to be targeting each other.
Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo said the confrontation unfolded in a densely packed festival area, placing hundreds of bystanders at risk. Investigators recovered two firearms from the scene, but no suspect had been arrested as of the latest police briefing.
Police have established multiple crime scenes as detectives continue gathering surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses and examining forensic evidence. Officers have urged anyone with videos or information about the shooting to come forward.
Festival Crowd Caught in Chaos
The shooting sent festival-goers scrambling for safety as the sound of gunfire interrupted the evening’s celebrations. Witnesses described scenes of confusion, with people running from the area and taking cover while emergency responders rushed to assist the wounded.
Police estimated that around 13,000 people were attending the festival when the shooting occurred, making the emergency response particularly challenging. The area remained heavily secured for several hours while investigators processed evidence and ensured there was no continuing threat to the public.
National Leaders Condemn the Violence
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was horrified by the attack, offering condolences to the families of those killed and expressing support for those injured and everyone affected by the violence.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also condemned the shooting, describing it as senseless violence and calling for those responsible to be identified, arrested and prosecuted. Both leaders thanked police officers, paramedics and other first responders who responded to the emergency.
A Major Community Celebration Interrupted
Salsa on St. Clair is one of Toronto’s best-known summer festivals, celebrating Latin American culture through live music, dance performances, food vendors and community events. The annual festival attracts thousands of visitors and has become a longstanding tradition in the city.
The shooting has cast a shadow over an event that is typically associated with family entertainment and cultural celebration, raising fresh concerns about public safety at large gatherings.
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are working to identify everyone involved. Police have not announced any arrests or released suspect descriptions, and the motive remains under investigation.
Officials are expected to provide further updates as investigators review evidence collected from the scene and continue speaking with witnesses. For now, authorities are asking anyone who may have captured photos or video during the incident to contact Toronto police as the investigation moves forward.
