For most airline passengers, a flight begins and ends with little interaction beyond the cabin crew. For Anita Mays, every journey could involve a music icon, Hollywood star or global celebrity stepping aboard a private jet.

After spending around 20 years as one of the relatively few women flying private aircraft for wealthy clients, Mays has begun sharing memories from a career that placed her at the centre of some remarkable encounters. Her stories offer an uncommon perspective on the personalities behind the public image, revealing that even some of the world’s most famous people often preferred simple comforts over luxury.

A Memorable First Celebrity Passenger

One of Mays’ earliest high-profile passengers was Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. The flight marked the beginning of a career that would later include transporting internationally recognised entertainers, business figures and other high-profile clients.

Soon after, she flew singer Tina Turner to Dublin while the music legend was touring. Expecting that Turner might favour elegant canapés during the flight, the crew arranged a refined menu to match her global superstar status.

Instead, Mays recalled being pleasantly surprised. Before leaving the aircraft, Turner thanked the crew by giving them tickets to her concert and requested something far more down to earth for her next journey: tomato soup followed by fish and chips.

For Mays, the moment became an early reminder that public perceptions of celebrities often differ from reality.

Life Inside the World of Private Aviation

Unlike commercial airline operations, private aviation offers far more direct interaction between pilots and passengers. Flight crews frequently communicate with clients before departure, oversee personalised travel arrangements and accommodate individual preferences throughout the journey.

That environment allowed Mays to observe famous passengers in situations rarely seen by the public. Away from cameras and red carpets, she found that many simply wanted a comfortable, efficient flight rather than extravagant treatment.

Working in private aviation also demanded discretion. Protecting passengers’ privacy is considered a fundamental part of the industry, making personal accounts from experienced pilots relatively uncommon.

Flying During a Changing Era

Mays began her career in the late 1980s, a period when private aviation was expanding rapidly as celebrities, executives and wealthy individuals increasingly relied on business aircraft for flexibility and privacy.

Over the following two decades, she witnessed significant changes in both aviation technology and luxury travel while continuing to transport high-profile clients across international destinations.

Her career also stood out because female private jet pilots were far less common at the time, making her one of a small number of women working in the field.

Famous Names and Lasting Impressions

Throughout her years in the cockpit, Mays encountered numerous well-known figures, including Beyoncé and David and Victoria Beckham, among many others.

Rather than focusing solely on celebrity status, her recollections emphasise the everyday moments that made lasting impressions. Small conversations, unexpected acts of kindness and surprisingly ordinary meal requests often became the memories that stayed with her longest.

Those experiences reinforce the idea that, despite their global fame, many high-profile travellers behave much like anyone else once the aircraft door closes.

Why Her Story Resonates

Interest in behind-the-scenes accounts of celebrity life remains strong, particularly when they come from people whose work naturally places them alongside public figures without seeking the spotlight themselves.

Mays’ reflections provide an unusual window into private aviation while illustrating the professionalism required to serve clients whose travel often attracts intense public attention. At the same time, her stories suggest that genuine interactions and simple gestures frequently leave the biggest impression—regardless of who is sitting in the cabin.
