This year’s Primetime Emmy nominations delivered the usual mix of celebration and disappointment, but a handful of omissions quickly became the biggest talking points. While acclaimed series including The Pitt and Hacks dominated the nominations, several high-profile performers and critically praised projects failed to secure the recognition many awards watchers expected.
The nominations, announced on July 8 ahead of the September ceremony, highlighted an increasingly competitive television landscape. Final seasons of several popular series were eligible this year, creating crowded acting and program categories that left little room for fan favorites.

Jeremy Allen White’s Emmy Streak Comes to an End
Among the day’s biggest surprises was the absence of Jeremy Allen White from the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category.
White had become one of television’s most decorated comedy stars through The Bear, earning three consecutive Emmy nominations and winning twice. Although the FX series remained in contention for Outstanding Comedy Series and co-star Ayo Edebiri received an acting nomination, White’s name was missing from the final ballot.
His omission reflected the strength of this year’s comedy field, which featured several newcomers alongside returning nominees.
Sydney Sweeney Misses Out Despite High-Profile Final Season
Sydney Sweeney also failed to earn a nomination for her performance as Cassie in the final season of Euphoria.
Her storyline generated significant discussion throughout the season, and she had previously received Emmy recognition for the role. While fellow cast members Zendaya and Colman Domingo secured nominations, Sweeney was left out despite strong attention surrounding her performance.
Other Notable Snubs
Several other actors and series also missed expected recognition.
Paul Anthony Kelly, whose portrayal of John F. Kennedy Jr. in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette attracted considerable awards buzz, did not receive an acting nomination even as the series itself remained in contention and co-star Sarah Pidgeon earned recognition.
Richard Gadd’s HBO limited series Half Man also underperformed. Although Gadd secured a supporting acting nomination, the series failed to break into the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category, and co-star Jamie Bell was overlooked.
Comedy series The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Tracy Morgan, was another unexpected shutout despite receiving positive reviews during its debut season.
Veteran actor Ethan Hawke likewise missed out for his performance in FX’s The Lowdown, illustrating just how competitive the comedy acting race proved to be this year.
‘Widow’s Bay’ Emerges as One of the Morning’s Biggest Winners
While some familiar names were left disappointed, Apple TV+’s freshman series Widow’s Bay enjoyed a breakout moment.
The horror-comedy collected 19 Emmy nominations, placing it among the most nominated programs of the year behind leaders The Pitt and Hacks. Its strong performance demonstrated broad support across multiple categories and established the series as one of the awards season’s biggest success stories.

Jason Bateman and Connor Storrie Deliver Surprise Moments
Jason Bateman also emerged as one of nomination morning’s unexpected winners.
The actor earned a Lead Actor nomination for Netflix’s Black Rabbit while also receiving Supporting Actor recognition for HBO’s DTF St. Louis, giving him two acting nominations in the same year despite relatively modest awards expectations for Black Rabbit.
Another pleasant surprise came for Connor Storrie. Although his breakout series Heated Rivalry was not eligible for Emmy consideration because of its production status, the Television Academy still recognized him with a Guest Actor in a Comedy Series nomination for hosting Saturday Night Live.
What Happens Next
The nominations set the stage for another closely watched Emmy race, with established favorites competing against a wave of new contenders. As campaigning intensifies over the coming weeks, attention will shift from the notable omissions to whether leading nominees such as The Pitt, Hacks and Widow’s Bay can convert their impressive nomination totals into Emmy victories.
The 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to take place on September 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with Mariska Hargitay hosting the ceremony, which will air on NBC.
