More than 12 years after saying goodbye to one of television’s most beloved medical dramas, Sandra Oh says she has no regrets about leaving Grey’s Anatomy when she did.
During an appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s On Me podcast, the actress reflected on the decision to exit the ABC series in 2014 after portraying cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Cristina Yang for 10 seasons. Oh said the choice came after careful consideration and conversations with series creator Shonda Rhimes during contract negotiations.
A Creative Decision After a Decade
According to Oh, Rhimes asked what she wanted to do as cast contracts were being renegotiated around seasons eight and nine. Rather than responding immediately, the actress took time to evaluate whether there was more she wanted to explore with the character.
She ultimately concluded that Cristina Yang’s journey had reached a satisfying endpoint. Oh explained that she felt she had fully developed the character over a decade, creating what she viewed as a believable personal and professional evolution.
That conviction, she said, gave her confidence to step away despite the show’s enormous popularity.
A Rare Opportunity for a Planned Farewell

One aspect of her departure that stands out to Oh is the way the series handled Cristina’s exit.
Rather than leaving abruptly, the actress was able to work with the show’s creative team on a storyline that provided closure. Cristina left Seattle to lead a prestigious medical research institute in Switzerland, allowing the character to move forward while remaining an important part of the show’s wider universe.
Oh described having the opportunity to plan such an ending as an uncommon privilege in television, crediting the writers for crafting a thoughtful farewell.
An Audition That Almost Took a Different Path
The podcast also revealed an unexpected detail about Oh’s casting process.
She said she initially auditioned for the role of Miranda Bailey before learning that Cristina Yang had not yet been cast. After reading about the character, she immediately felt Cristina was the role she wanted to pursue.
Oh also recalled leaving an audition at her manager’s instruction because of contract negotiations. Despite not completing a network audition, the creative team had already seen enough during an earlier work session to cast her in the role.
Cristina Yang’s Enduring Legacy
Although Oh has repeatedly acknowledged the affection fans continue to have for Cristina Yang, she has consistently indicated that she considers the character’s story complete. Over the years, she has said remaining true to her own creative instincts has been an important factor in moving on from the series.
Even so, Cristina’s influence continues to be felt within Grey’s Anatomy. The character is still referenced on the long-running drama, and her relationship with Meredith Grey remains one of the defining friendships in the show’s history.
For many viewers, Oh’s latest reflections reinforce why Cristina Yang’s departure remains one of the most memorable exits in modern television—a farewell that was carefully planned, emotionally satisfying, and, in the actress’s view, arrived at exactly the right moment.
