Newly filed probate documents show that actress Daveigh Chase, remembered for her performances in The Ring and as the voice of Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, left behind an estate worth an estimated $400,000 in personal property after her death at age 35.
According to court filings submitted in Los Angeles County, Chase died without a will, prompting her mother, Cathy Chase, to ask the court to appoint her as the administrator of the estate. The petition estimates that the actress owned roughly $400,000 in personal property and no real estate at the time of her death.
Probate Process Begins
Because Chase was never married and had no children, the estate will be handled through California’s probate process. Court records identify her parents as her surviving next of kin.
In the filing, Cathy Chase stated that Daveigh’s father, John Schwallier, is believed to be living somewhere in the Philippines, although his exact address is unknown. The documents also note that he reportedly maintains property in Las Vegas.
If the court approves the request, Cathy Chase would be responsible for managing the estate, including safeguarding assets, notifying creditors and completing the legal requirements associated with probate. A hearing has been scheduled for August.
Stark Contrast Between Estate and Final Circumstances
The estate filing has drawn attention because it contrasts sharply with reports about Chase’s final years. The actress was reportedly unhoused and living in downtown Los Angeles before her death, despite possessing substantial personal assets.
Her death last month marked a tragic end to the career of a performer who rose to prominence as a child actor. Chase gained widespread recognition for portraying Samara Morgan in the 2002 horror film The Ring and for voicing Lilo Pelekai in Disney’s animated hit Lilo & Stitch. She also appeared in several television series and films during the early 2000s.
