Aida Turturro, best known for portraying Janice Soprano in HBO’s The Sopranos, has spoken candidly about a life-threatening medical emergency that she initially failed to recognize. Appearing on the MeSsy podcast hosted by her former co-star Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Christina Applegate, the actress recalled dismissing warning signs that later turned out to be a heart attack.
Turturro explained that she had experienced chest pain for some time but believed it was linked to a hiatal hernia, a condition that can produce symptoms similar to those of a heart attack. Because she thought the discomfort had another explanation, she did not immediately seek emergency treatment.

Symptoms Were Brushed Aside Until Doctors Made a Serious Discovery
The actress recounted an incident during a visit with friends when the pain intensified. Although those around her suggested calling an ambulance, she chose to go home instead, believing the episode would pass. Days later, after speaking with a doctor who urged her to see a cardiologist, she underwent medical evaluation and learned she had already suffered a heart attack.
Further testing revealed the seriousness of her condition. According to Turturro, doctors found that between roughly 88% and 90% of her arteries were blocked, prompting emergency quadruple bypass surgery. She has since described surviving the ordeal as a reminder of how quickly a health crisis can escalate when symptoms are overlooked.
Living With Diabetes Added to the Risk
Turturro also reflected on the role that her long-standing type 2 diabetes may have played in her cardiovascular health. Diagnosed with diabetes in 2001, she said the experience reinforced the connection between chronic conditions and heart disease, encouraging people with similar risk factors to stay vigilant about changes in their health.
She described herself as fortunate to have survived, saying she feels grateful for the support of family, friends and medical professionals during her recovery. Looking back, she believes paying closer attention to persistent symptoms could have led to earlier treatment.
A Message About Prioritizing Personal Health
Rather than focusing only on her own experience, Turturro used the conversation to encourage others not to ignore potential warning signs. She stressed that caring for personal health is essential, particularly for those who have family responsibilities and loved ones depending on them.

Her comments arrive as health organizations continue to emphasize that heart attack symptoms can vary between individuals and should never be dismissed without medical evaluation. Persistent chest pain or other concerning symptoms warrant prompt attention from healthcare professionals, even when another condition seems like a likely explanation.
A Story That Resonates With The Sopranos Legacy
Turturro’s reflections also carry added emotional weight for fans of The Sopranos. Her co-star James Gandolfini, who played Tony Soprano, died from a heart attack in 2013 at the age of 51, a loss that remains deeply felt by the show’s cast and audience.
Now years removed from her own medical emergency, Turturro says the experience reshaped her priorities. By sharing her story publicly, she hopes others will recognize that seemingly familiar symptoms can sometimes signal a far more serious condition—and that seeking medical care without delay can make a life-saving difference.
