Scott Galloway, the entrepreneur, author and New York University Stern School of Business professor known for his outspoken commentary on business, technology and higher education, has been selected by California Governor Gavin Newsom to serve on the University of California Board of Regents. If confirmed by the California State Senate, Galloway will join the governing body responsible for overseeing one of the largest public university systems in the United States.
The appointment places one of the country’s most recognizable business commentators in a position that influences policy across the University of California’s 10-campus system. Galloway, a graduate of both UCLA and UC Berkeley, has frequently spoken about the future of higher education, college affordability and the role universities play in preparing students for the modern economy.

Jay Sures, vice chairman of United Talent Agency and a current member of the UC Board of Regents, welcomed the appointment and said Galloway’s experience would strengthen the board during a period of significant change.
According to Sures, the university system faces major challenges over the coming years, making strong oversight and business expertise increasingly important. He described Galloway as someone capable of offering practical leadership while bringing a willingness to challenge conventional thinking rather than simply following consensus.
Sures also pointed to Galloway’s public commentary, particularly on international affairs and higher education, saying he admired his readiness to speak openly on difficult issues even when those views attract criticism.
A Well-Known Figure in Business and Media
Beyond academia, Galloway has built a national profile through books, public speaking and podcasts, including Pivot, which he co-hosts with journalist Kara Swisher, and Prof G Markets. His commentary regularly covers technology companies, financial markets, economic policy and higher education.
Before entering academia, Galloway founded several companies, including branding consultancy Prophet, online retailer RedEnvelope and digital intelligence firm L2. He has also served on the boards of major public companies, including The New York Times Company, Urban Outfitters and Panera Bread.
Role of the University of California Regents
The University of California Board of Regents oversees governance for the state’s public university system, including long-term planning, financial oversight and major institutional policies. Most appointed regents serve 12-year terms following nomination by the governor and confirmation by the California State Senate.
The board has been involved in a number of high-profile debates in recent years, ranging from campus governance and student issues to broader discussions about free expression and university policy. Galloway’s appointment is expected to add another prominent voice to those conversations.
What Happens Next
Before officially joining the board, Galloway’s appointment must receive confirmation from the California State Senate. If approved, he will take a seat on the 26-member governing body at a time when the University of California continues to address financial pressures, academic priorities and the evolving expectations placed on public higher education.
